need to create a Spam Flag

need to create a spam flag that will remove a post until the admin can review it... don't know how to do it, but it would be a good thing

Re:need to create a Spam Flag
I like the concept (what, me, vigilantist tendencies? never!) - tricky part (aside from the necessary backend coding) is making it effective while also providing safeguards against abusing the system... maybe one report would flag it for admin review, need more reports to temporarily hide the post or something... probably not so much of a problem on this board though (haven't had too many flamewars, etc. in recent memory)

Just as long as no-one proposes a flag for run-on sentences...

Re:need to create a Spam Flag
Sorry gang. About a year ago we changed the registration to require an email confirmation and that seemed to keep the spambots at bay quite nicely. Apparently they've figured a way around that now though, so I've been forced to change things again so that I have to manually approve new users. Kind of a pain, but better than what we've seen the last few days. It should be all clear now.

It works nicely. I don't mind filtering potential users at all. It's great to finally have things back to normal.

carson, you rock! tell your boss you need a raise (or in the case of my place of work, you deserve not to be furloughed... :) And as for people with run on sentences... well thats another story! (coming from someone who was in his 30s before he understood what commas were for ;) )...

Re:need to create a Spam Flag
As I'm now a Moderator on Firestream, we have seen armies of people (not bots!) register for the purposes of spreading spam. Spammer organizations overseas (in Asia, and Eastern Europe, mostly) are hiring people to manually register and then post their wares.

I don't think our Admins wanted to have to manually approve every possible new member (we get a LOT of legit new members weekly), but we have people around the world watching for new members who have already spammed elsewhere, or fit profiles of spammers, and we try to nuke them even while they're in the process of registering! ;)

Peace,

Jeff

Yeah, the same thing happened to me. It got so bad, I had to completely shut down the Coriolis forum, indefinitely. I just couldn't keep up with manually sifting through TWO HUNDRED new memberships a day, 199 of which were porn spammers. I feel your pain Carson.
